Winston-Salem, NC (July 13, 2024) - According to local news sources, a 22-year-old man died following a car chase in Winston-Salem. The incident began late Saturday night around 11:40 p.m. when officers from the Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) responded to a disturbance involving a person with a knife in the 600 block of Waughtown Street.
When officers arrived, they found both the suspect's and the victim's cars. The suspect, later identified as Arnoldo Montenegro, initially complied with police but soon rammed a patrol car and fled the scene, initiating a chase. The pursuit continued onto Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and ended near Argonne Boulevard when Montenegro's vehicle collided head-on with another car.
Montenegro was critically injured in the crash and was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around 1 a.m. The driver of the car hit head-on sustained only minor injuries. The victim involved in the initial disturbance on Waughtown Street, who knew Montenegro, was reported to be in good health.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) took over the investigation of the traffic crash, while the WSPD announced an internal administrative investigation through their Professional Standards Division to ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures. Two officers involved have been placed on administrative duty, and their identities have not been disclosed.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the WSPD's non-emergency number or Crime Stoppers to submit anonymous tips.
