Rocky Mount, NC (July 6, 2024) - According to local news sources, a motorcycle crash during a memorial ride in Rocky Mount left two people with serious injuries on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred around noon on westbound U.S. 64 near Winstead Avenue at mile marker 466. The crash involved a motorcycle carrying a married couple, Linwood and Amy Mercer, who were participating in a ride to honor Michael “Big Mike” Ray Bullock, a beloved figure in the biker community.
Nash County officials reported that the couple fell from their motorcycle and suffered head injuries, fluctuating between consciousness. They were airlifted to a hospital in Greenville, where they are expected to recover, although they face a long road ahead.
The Rocky Mount Police Department, along with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, initially closed both westbound lanes of U.S. 64. The left lane reopened around 1:30 p.m., and the right lane reopened around 3:50 p.m.
As per the Rocky Mount Police Department, their Traffic Enforcement and Crash Reconstruction Unit is leading the investigation into the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports indicate that a car merged into the lane of the bikers, causing the motorcycle to veer off the road. The police have asked anyone with information to come forward.
