Approximately 40 seniors participated in the parade, which involves a procession of cars driving through parts of the town while spectators watch along the route. The Roanoke Rapids Police Department, which led the parade, provided a detailed account of the event on social media.
Police received multiple complaints and critical comments on Facebook regarding their handling of the incident. One comment stated, “the officer driving was ridiculous,” and another mentioned, “nothing organized” and “no one did a [expletive deleted] thing!!!” Concerns were also raised about the presence of posts on the town’s social media pages discussing the event.
In response, police clarified the parade's setup, noting that each participant's vehicle had been inspected, insured, and licensed before the event. They emphasized that traffic control measures were in place to ensure safety at intersections.
The police report detailed the crash, explaining that a red vehicle stopped with the rest of the parade traffic at 10th Street on Park Avenue near Manning School. A black vehicle rear-ended the red vehicle at about 15 mph, causing fluids to leak from the black vehicle, which then pulled over. A tow truck was called at the owner’s request. The red vehicle, which sustained minimal damage, continued in the parade before returning to speak with an officer.
Police identified the driver of the black vehicle as being at fault, a common outcome in rear-end collisions. No citations were issued as both vehicles were insured. Officers expressed regret over the incident, stating, “We regret this accident occurred and this memory was ruined for this student. However, we can’t let it be inaccurately disseminated that a hit and run occurred and we did nothing about it, nor did we have any empathy for this child’s ruined day.”
