Eden, NC (April 24, 2025) - According to local news reports, a tragic accident in Eden resulted in the deaths of four pedestrians and injuries to three others, including the driver, when a city-operated dump truck plowed through a worksite where powerline contractors were stationed.
The incident occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the intersection of Carroll Street and Church Street. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded alongside Eden police to the scene. Reports confirm that 66-year-old Michael Ray Vernon, a resident of Eden and the operator of a city-owned 2016 Hino dump truck, failed to stop at a marked intersection stop sign. He proceeded through the crossing and struck six men who were conducting overhead line maintenance for Carolina Power and Signalization, a contractor working with Duke Energy.
Authorities identified the four men killed on-site as Douglas Garland Sides, 72, of Summerfield; Madison Carter, 42, of Sandy Ridge; William Evans, 35, of Randleman; and Matthew Lockwood, 30, of Winston-Salem. Two additional pedestrians, aged 24 and 34, suffered life-threatening injuries. They were airlifted to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. At last check, one of the injured remains in critical condition while the other is considered stable.
After hitting the workers, the dump truck continued forward and crashed into an occupied bucket truck. The person inside that vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Vernon, who also suffered minor injuries, was treated at a hospital and has since been charged with a stop sign violation and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
Eyewitness accounts from the scene described the dump truck traveling at an extremely high speed. One witness estimated it was going "at least 70 to 80 miles per hour" and failed to slow down before the crash. Officials have stated that they do not suspect impairment played a role in the accident.
Duke Energy confirmed that some of the contractors involved in the collision were working on their behalf. The utility company issued a public statement, saying, “We are saddened about the tragic event that happened today, and our hearts go out to the families and teammates of those involved. The safety of our employees, contractors and customers is the highest priority at Duke Energy. We are working closely with law enforcement officials.”
As the crash involved a city vehicle, the investigation has been turned over to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, which is continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
