The chase continued as Powell sped south on NC-87, eventually reaching the town of Spring Lake. Upon approaching the intersection of North Bragg Boulevard and McKenzie Road, the Acura crashed into a 2012 Honda Accord, which was in the process of making a left turn. The impact of the collision caused the Acura to careen into a nearby utility pole, where it subsequently caught fire.
The passenger in the Honda Accord was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the Honda was rushed to Cape Fear Valley Hospital with serious injuries. Powell, the driver of the Acura, was transported to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill in critical condition. Authorities suspect that alcohol played a role in the crash, and charges against Powell are expected to be filed.
