Charlotte, NC (September 9, 2024) – Authorities have released further details surrounding a fatal two-vehicle accident that occurred early Monday morning at the intersection of Hood Road and Plaza Road Extension in East Charlotte.
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), the crash, which took place around 4:45 a.m., involved a 1999 Ford F-150 and a 2018 Ford F-250. Detectives with the CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit confirmed that the driver of the Ford F-150, identified as 57-year-old Lee Staten, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford F-250, 30-year-old Edwin Bellorin, Jr., suffered minor injuries and remained on the scene.
Initial investigations suggest that Staten’s F-150 was traveling north on Hood Road with a green light when Bellorin’s F-250, traveling east on Plaza Road Extension, ran a red light and collided with Staten’s vehicle on the driver’s side. The impact caused extensive damage to both vehicles.
CMPD detectives also confirmed that Bellorin showed signs of impairment at the scene. He was arrested and later charged with Felony Death by Motor Vehicle after being transported to the Law Enforcement Center in Uptown Charlotte. He is now in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Crime Scene Search units processed the area, gathering physical evidence.
