Charlotte, NC (August 22, 2024) – According to local news reports, a tragic incident occurred in the University City Division of Charlotte, where a 3-year-old child was seriously injured in a dog attack on August 19, 2024. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Animal Care and Control unit is currently investigating the event.

On that Monday evening, around 8:51 p.m., CMPD officers along with MEDIC personnel were dispatched to the 5400 block of Cameron Commons Parkway after receiving a distress call about a dog attack. The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was playing in the front yard with other children when three dogs, owned by the child’s family, were let out of the garage. While two of the dogs playfully knocked the child to the ground, the third dog suddenly began to bite the child and dragged them down the driveway.

The chaos that ensued was met with quick action from several adult witnesses who rushed to aid the child. Two individuals among them fired gunshots near the attacking dog, which led the dog to retreat back into the garage. The injured child was immediately transported to Atrium Health Main with serious injuries.

In the aftermath of the attack, the dog responsible for the injuries was surrendered to Animal Care and Control by its owner. The canine is now under a mandatory 10-day rabies quarantine and is scheduled to be euthanized once the quarantine period ends.

The CMPD has emphasized the importance of supervising young children around dogs to prevent such tragic incidents. The investigation remains active, and further details will be released as they become available.
