Stanly County, NC (February 27, 2023) - Local news outlets report a tragic accident on N.C. 742 in Stanly County, which resulted in the death of one person. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 5:40 a.m. on Monday February 27, 2023. A 2022 Ram 4500 was traveling south on N.C. 742 near Old Sandbar Road when the truck briefly traveled off the road to the right before coming back on and overturning.
There were four people in the vehicle at the time of the crash, with the victim being a passenger who was not wearing a seat belt. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The other three individuals in the truck were taken to Atrium Health Cabarrus in Concord for their injuries. Speed was a factor in the crash, and the morning fog was significant in the area, according to Trooper B.L. Baucom.
The identity of the victim and the three others involved in the accident have not been made available to the public at this time. The crash is still under investigation, and it is unclear if the driver in the crash will face any charges. The accident resulted in the closure of part of N.C. 742 near Old Sandbar Road.
UPDATE: According to a recent news report, Jose Rodriguez-Lopez of Winston-Salem was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver, Concord resident Alan Luna, 28, and the two other passengers, Rafael Rodriguez of Lenoir and Noe Lemus-Lopez of Winston-Salem, were taken for treatment of minor injuries. Only Alan Luna and Rodriguez were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. No evidence of alcohol involvement was found.
Alan Luna has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and careless and reckless driving.
