Asheville, NC (February 08, 2025) - According to local news reports, a tragic motorcycle accident in South Asheville has resulted in the death of a motorcyclist, with a local man now facing multiple charges in connection to the crash.
Motorcyclist Killed in Asheville Crash After Collision With SUV
Authorities confirmed that the accident occurred on February 8, 2025, at approximately 2:55 p.m. on Hendersonville Road near the intersection with Gala Drive. According to the Asheville Police Department (APD), 44-year-old Brandon Scott Owenby was riding a 1999 Kawasaki ZX600-G motorcycle northbound when he was struck by a 2021 Honda Pilot attempting to make a left turn from Gala Drive onto Hendersonville Road.
The driver of the SUV, identified as Stephen Michael Poandl, 44, of Arden, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failure to yield causing serious bodily injury, and making an improper turn. After the APD completed its investigation and consulted with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office, Poandl turned himself in on February 10, 2025. He was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility with a $20,000 unsecured bond, meaning he was released but would be required to pay the amount if he failed to appear in court. His first court hearing is scheduled for April 9.
Emergency personnel transported Owenby to Mission Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The APD urged anyone with additional information about the crash to contact the department or submit anonymous tips through their official reporting channels.
Recent Motorcycle Fatalities Raise Concerns in Asheville
The fatal crash involving Owenby is the second motorcycle-related death in Asheville in 2025. Just four days prior, on February 4, 80-year-old Richard William Walker lost his life in a separate accident after driving his motorcycle the wrong way on Interstate 40 East near Mile Marker 51. That same day, another motorcyclist, 22-year-old Brian Hughes of Swannanoa, died after losing control of his Harley-Davidson on Bee Tree Road, veering off the road, and striking an embankment.
These incidents highlight an alarming trend in the Asheville area, particularly in light of a record number of traffic fatalities reported in 2024. Law enforcement officials have emphasized the need for increased awareness on the road, particularly when it comes to looking out for motorcyclists.
APD Chief Mike Lamb addressed the dangers that motorcyclists face, stating, "Sometimes, motorists can miss [motorcycles] because of their size. Before pulling out somewhere, look. Look twice and be aware for not only vehicles, but also motorcycles."
