Durham, NC (April 20, 2025) - According to local news reports, a deadly car crash in Durham County on Easter Sunday claimed the lives of three people and injured three others after a high-speed incident involving suspects fleeing law enforcement. The crash followed a call about gunfire exchanged between occupants of two vehicles in the 8200 block of Ball Road.
Deputies with the Durham County Sheriff’s Office responded just before 6:30 p.m. to reports of a white Audi and a black Infiniti involved in a shooting. Shortly after, both vehicles were spotted at a convenience store on Roxboro Street. As deputies attempted to engage, the suspects fled the scene. A deputy began pursuing the black 2003 Infiniti, but soon lost sight of it.
Roughly seven minutes later, the Infiniti, traveling at high speed southbound on U.S. 501 (North Roxboro Street), crossed the center line near Latta Road. The vehicle crashed head-on into a black Honda CR-V driven by Sandra Marie Moore of Bahama. It then collided with a red Lincoln Navigator traveling north. Surveillance footage showed the Infiniti speeding away just before impact and splitting into two large pieces upon collision.
Both the driver of the Infiniti, identified as 22-year-old Hunter Sullivan, and passenger Mercedes Toledo-Goss were ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Moore, who was unaffiliated with the earlier shooting, also died on-site. The three occupants of the Navigator, including driver David Aguilar Mora of Timberlake, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Duke Medical Center.
Eyewitness accounts and newly released surveillance video support that the deputy arrived approximately five seconds after the crash, contradicting any claims of an active pursuit at the moment of impact. Authorities maintain the deputy was not engaged in a high-speed chase when the wreck occurred.
The white Audi believed to be involved in the original shooting incident has not yet been located, and the investigation remains ongoing. Officials are working to determine if the suspects were committing a violent felony that required immediate action by law enforcement. Radio dispatch audio and statements from witnesses indicate speeds exceeded 120 mph during the suspects’ attempt to flee.
A memorial has since formed at the crash site on North Roxboro Street, where community members have gathered in mourning. Officials from both the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Durham County Sheriff’s Office continue their joint efforts to locate additional suspects and fully understand the events that led to the crash.
