The driver of the dump truck, 59-year-old Robert Claude Smith, also from Morganton, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the same hospital for medical care.
Initial investigations by the Highway Patrol confirmed that neither speed nor impairment played a role in the accident. As such, no charges will be filed. The roadway remained closed for approximately two hours during the on-site investigation.
