The contact tore part of the tarping system from the truck, which landed in the roadway alongside the utility line.

Two individuals in the group, 33-year-old Stephen James Matyas of St. Petersburg, FL, and 29-year-old Megan Justine Brannon of Seminole, FL, were fatally injured. "The motorcyclists then crashed after becoming entangled with the tarp and the utility line left in the roadway," said the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Others in the group, identified as 44-year-old Chad Mallonee of Port St. Lucie, FL, 51-year-old Calvin John Gollogly of Largo, FL, 49-year-old Donald Edward Harper of Ormond Beach, FL, and 39-year-old Jamie Marie Jellissen of Largo, FL, sustained serious injuries. They were taken to a nearby hospital, treated, and have since been released.
Adding to the tragedy, Cooper failed to remain at the scene of the accident. Law enforcement later found him at Best Logistics Group in Kernersville, NC. Officials indicated that the company is responsible for the tractor-trailer Cooper was driving.
