Charlotte, NC (August 28, 2024) - Local news outlets report that detectives from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are actively investigating a tragic pedestrian accident that occurred on August 19, 2024, in the South Division of Charlotte. The incident took place at approximately 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Pineville-Matthews Road and Providence Road and involved three vehicles and a pedestrian, resulting in the death of 41-year-old Eric Macken.
According to the authorities, the accident occurred when a 2022 Dodge Ram pickup, driven by 44-year-old Scott Austin, failed to stop for a red light while traveling through the intersection. The Dodge Ram collided with a 2016 GMC Yukon SUV, which was turning onto Providence Road. The impact caused the Ram to spin out of control, striking Mr. Macken, who was crossing the road in a marked crosswalk. The Ram then continued to hit a 2018 Volkswagen, causing minor damage to the vehicle’s rear bumper.
Emergency services, including the Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC, were promptly dispatched to the scene. Mr. Macken was found lying in the roadway near the Dodge Ram and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries the following day, on August 20, 2024.
The investigation revealed that speed and impairment were not contributing factors in the crash. Nevertheless, after reviewing the evidence, the Mecklenburg County Magistrate’s Office issued a warrant for Scott Austin for Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle. On August 28, Mr. Austin voluntarily surrendered to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department continues to investigate this case, and they urge anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has additional information to come forward.
