Wilkes County, NC (May 9, 2024) - According to local news sources, a tragic accident occurred on NC-16 near Nichols Landing Lane in Wilkes County, leading to one fatality and one injury. The incident involved a head-on collision between a 2009 Toyota Venza and a 2008 Jeep Liberty, following an initial crash with a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado.

At around 1:30 p.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol was alerted to the accident. Reports indicate that the Toyota, driven by 20-year-old Shane Reese Cleary of North Wilkesboro, was traveling south behind the Chevrolet, which was attempting a left turn into a private driveway. The Toyota failed to slow down adequately, swerved, and collided with the Chevrolet before crossing the centerline and striking the Jeep head-on.

Shane Reese Cleary, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the Toyota and pronounced dead at the scene. The other drivers involved, 81-year-old William Allen Binge of Millers Creek, who drove the Chevrolet, and 43-year-old Nathan Shane Oxentine of Millers Creek, the Jeep driver, experienced different fates. Mr. Binge escaped the incident unscathed, while Mr. Oxentine was transported to Wilkes Regional Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Master Trooper Christopher Casey of the N.C. Highway Patrol confirmed that impairment was not considered a factor in this accident. The roadway was closed for approximately three hours to facilitate an on-scene investigation, which concluded with the decision that no charges would be filed.

This incident highlights the critical importance of adhering to road safety rules, including wearing seatbelts and maintaining safe speeds, especially when navigating turns or when behind slower-moving vehicles.
