Winston-Salem, NC (April 01, 2025) - According to local news sources, a deadly three-vehicle collision occurred Tuesday morning on Interstate 77 in Surry County, North Carolina, resulting in one fatality and two injuries. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that the crash happened around 8:20 a.m. near mile marker 86 in the southbound lanes.

Troopers said a white 2024 Volvo tractor-trailer was stopped in the left-hand lane due to traffic congestion ahead. A white 2017 Chevrolet Equinox, carrying two occupants, was traveling southbound when it struck the back of the stationary tractor-trailer. Moments later, a purple 2021 Honda CR-V rear-ended the Chevrolet Equinox.

The driver of the Equinox, identified as 51-year-old Russell K. Losser of Galax, Virginia, died at the scene from his injuries. According to authorities, he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. His passenger, seated in the front right seat, sustained injuries and was transported by EMS to Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin for medical treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been publicly disclosed.

The driver of the Honda CR-V also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the Volvo tractor-trailer remained unharmed and did not require hospitalization.

The impact and subsequent investigation led to the temporary closure of the southbound section of I-77 near the crash site for approximately two hours as troopers worked to document the scene and clear the roadway.

Authorities have not yet released additional details about the cause of the crash or whether charges are pending. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the sequence of events leading to this tragic collision.
