At approximately 4:51 p.m., emergency responders were dispatched to the 800 block of Old Lenoir Road NW following reports of a crash. According to the Hickory Police Department, Bobby Lee Ray, 76, of Hickory, was driving a 1990 Ford Ranger attempting a left turn onto 11th Street NW. Simultaneously, Evan Lane Lackey, 21, also from Hickory, was traveling westbound on Old Lenoir Road NW in a 2010 Ford Mustang.
The vehicles collided at the intersection, leading the Mustang to veer off and strike a building located at 808 Old Lenoir Road NW. The impact caused significant damage to the structure, leaving a side wall destroyed and prompting the Hickory Fire Department to post warning signs advising the public to keep out.
Lackey sustained injuries and was transported to Frye Regional Medical Center by Catawba County EMS. Tragically, Ray was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hickory Fire Department also responded to the incident.
Witnesses recounted the chaotic aftermath. Larry Armstrong, a nearby resident, mentioned hearing the crash and observing emergency crews attempting to extricate a person from one of the vehicles. Melanie Murphy, an employee at Rhonda Lestage Furnishings and Design, recalled hearing screeching brakes and immediately calling 911.
