Benson, NC (June 22, 2024) - According to local news sources, a high-speed chase in Johnston County on Saturday night culminated in a crash that hit speeds of 150 mph. The pursuit began shortly before midnight when a North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper clocked a black Dodge Challenger Scat Pack at 92 mph in a 70 mph zone on Interstate 40.
The driver, identified as Lamine Mckenly Lo, 26, of Raeford, initially pulled over but sped off as the trooper approached the vehicle. The chase continued eastbound on I-40 from mile marker 322 and onto I-95 southbound. The Dodge reached speeds well over 100 mph before attempting to exit at Benson at mile marker 79, where it struck a guardrail and flipped.
The vehicle landed on its wheels facing south on the exit ramp. The pursuing trooper was unable to avoid the overturned car, resulting in a collision with the concrete barrier and subsequently with the Dodge.
Lo was arrested on multiple charges, including felony flee to elude arrest, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and failure to heed blue lights and siren. He was taken to the Johnston County Detention Center. A 25-year-old woman from Fayetteville, who was also in the car, was detained but not charged. Remarkably, no injuries were reported in the incident.
The exit ramp to Benson remained closed for more than an hour as authorities cleared the scene and investigated the crash. The Dodge Challenger was confirmed to be stolen from Smithfield, and the license plate had also been reported stolen.
