Garner, NC (August 5, 2024) - According to local news sources, a high-speed chase on Interstate 40 that reached speeds of 150 mph ended in a collision on Monday night, injuring a father and son near Garner. The chase involved a stolen Dodge Charger, driven by 19-year-old Donovan Curtis of Raleigh, who was later apprehended by the authorities.
The incident unfolded around 8:45 p.m. near Lake Wheeler Road when a state trooper clocked a black Dodge Charger speeding at 90 mph in a 65 mph zone. The driver, identified as Curtis, sped off heading east on I-40, weaving through traffic. The pursuit, lasting approximately 10 minutes, peaked at 150 mph.
The chase culminated at mile marker 306 near the U.S. 70 exit when Curtis's vehicle collided with a pickup truck, severely damaging it and injuring its occupants. The injured individuals, Chris Davis and his 14-year-old son Aiden, had to be cut out of their vehicle. Both were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries that were not deemed life-threatening.
Curtis, who was uninjured in the crash, faces multiple charges, including possession of a stolen vehicle, felony flee to elude arrest, felony possession of marijuana, carrying a concealed gun, aggressive driving, and cruelty to animals for injuring a small black dog found in the vehicle. He is currently held without bond in the Wake County Jail.
A bystander, Steven Mather, recounted the surreal experience of witnessing the Charger speeding past him and the subsequent crash, describing it as a “sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach.”
