Raleigh, NC (May 22, 2024) - According to local news sources, a fatal accident involving a UPS truck and two other vehicles resulted in one death and one injury early Wednesday morning. The crash occurred near the intersection of E. Millbrook Road and Atlantic Avenue.
Raleigh police officers responded to the scene around 3:31 a.m. The collision involved a car, a pickup truck, and a UPS truck near a Circle K gas station. Photos from the scene showed significant damage to the car and pickup truck, while the UPS truck appeared undamaged.
Family members informed WRAL News that the driver of the red car was hospitalized and is in stable condition. However, another person involved in the crash was transported to the hospital with serious injuries and later pronounced dead.
The crash was caused by a 16-year-old driver who ran a red light and collided with a Dodge pickup truck driven by 63-year-old John Gottilly. The impact pushed Gottilly's vehicle into an oncoming tractor-trailer towing two UPS trailers. Gottilly was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries and later died. The teen driver, whose name has not been released, was also hospitalized with serious injuries and has been charged with DWI. More charges may follow as the investigation continues.
Due to the severity of the crash, the intersection of E. Millbrook Road and Atlantic Avenue was closed for approximately 12 hours, reopening to traffic at 3:40 p.m. Drivers were detoured around the area during the morning rush hour. The cause of the accident remains under investigation by Raleigh police, who are working to determine the events that led to the collision. Drivers are advised to take alternate routes to avoid traffic delays in the area.
