Fayetteville, NC (May 30, 2024) - According to local news sources, a high-speed police chase involving a stolen vehicle resulted in a fatal crash that killed a juvenile and injured two others. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. when Fayetteville Police officers attempted to stop a stolen 2014 Hyundai Sonata as part of an ongoing vehicle theft trend in the city. The driver, Donovan Rozier, 21, fled the scene, leading officers on a chase that ended in a collision on US 301 South.
Officers temporarily lost sight of the vehicle after it turned from Elk Road onto US 301 South. When they arrived at the crash scene, they discovered the Sonata had collided with a 2018 Hyundai Tucson driven by Charles Reid, 22, of Hope Mills, NC. The juvenile passenger in the stolen vehicle was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Rozier and another passenger, Tremel Sinclair, 18, were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with minor injuries. Reid sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to the same hospital.
Rozier attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by the police. He faces multiple charges, including involuntary manslaughter, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, felony child abuse, fleeing to elude arrest, careless and reckless driving, driving with a revoked license, driving left of center, speeding, and failure to wear a seatbelt. His bond was initially set at $200,000 but was later increased to $400,000.
During Rozier's court appearance, Assistant District Attorney Jim MacRae revealed that the stolen vehicle had been reported missing since February and that Rozier was allegedly driving the wrong way on the highway when the crash occurred. The pursuit reportedly reached speeds of up to 115 mph according to police radio traffic.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the collision, and the Fayetteville Police Department's Internal Affairs Unit will review the officers' actions during the chase.
