Beaufort, NC (December 21, 2024) - According to local news reports, a tragic two-vehicle collision occurred on Highway 264 near Goose Creek Road, leaving one person dead and injuring two others. The accident happened around 1:50 p.m. and involved a 2023 GMC Yukon and a 2010 Chrysler van.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has identified the driver of the GMC Yukon as John Thomas Wiggins, a 70-year-old man from Goldsboro. Authorities report that Wiggins was traveling west on Highway 264 when he crossed the centerline, veered off the road, and returned to the roadway, colliding head-on with the Chrysler van. The Chrysler was occupied by Lucy Clark Gurganus, 67, and Ethan Tyler Crawford, 18, both residents of Washington, NC.
Tragically, Gurganus was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, Crawford, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville for treatment. Wiggins also sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital. His current condition has not been disclosed.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has charged Wiggins with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, left of center, and careless and reckless driving. The Bath and Bunyan Fire Departments, along with other first responders, provided assistance at the scene. Officials have stated that the investigation remains ongoing.
