Lenoir, NC (September 18, 2024) – According to local news sources, a man was arrested after stealing a Spectrum boom truck with a utility worker still inside the bucket on Wednesday night. The incident, which occurred in Caldwell County, resulted in damage to utility lines and injuries to the worker.

Frank Moody, the suspect, had been released from jail just two hours before the theft. He was arrested again and charged with several felonies, including assault with a deadly weapon, larceny of a motor vehicle, and injuring utility company wires and fixtures.

The incident unfolded along Morganton Boulevard Southwest near Southwest Boulevard, where the utility worker was servicing lines in the elevated bucket of the Spectrum truck. Reports indicate that Moody drove the vehicle with the worker still inside, traveling a short distance before striking an overhanging utility line, causing significant damage. The collision broke a utility pole, which led to the worker falling from the bucket. Although the worker sustained injuries, they were not life-threatening. Power outages were reported in the area, and repair crews worked for over 12 hours to restore the damaged lines.

As per police, Moody drove the stolen truck south on Highway 18 with the boom extended, hitting several utility lines. Witnesses reported seeing the worker suspended in the air by a safety harness before cutting the line and falling to the ground, injuring his leg. Moody was apprehended by law enforcement at the scene and held on a $100,000 bond. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Lenoir Police Department.

Spectrum issued a statement regarding the situation, confirming that the worker was under observation at a local hospital and thanking the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office and Lenoir Police Department for their swift response.

The highway was closed for over 12 hours due to the necessary repairs, and another nearby accident involving a bicyclist occurred on an alternate route, adding to the day's incidents.
