Charlotte, NC (June 27, 2024) - According to local news sources, a man was arrested Thursday morning after leading authorities on a chase in a stolen Amazon truck in Charlotte. The incident began around 11:30 p.m. on South Tryon Street near Pressley Road in southwest Charlotte. Officers had been following a stolen Ford F-250 after it ran a traffic stop and sped away.
Both the driver and passenger eventually jumped out of the vehicle and ran. The passenger, identified as 26-year-old Michael Watts, was found hiding in a nearby dumpster. He had several warrants in Mecklenburg and Gaston counties. According to the Charlotte Police Department, the driver, identified as 28-year-old Devin Mitchell, then stole an unoccupied Amazon truck while the worker was making deliveries. Mitchell drove it to Gaston County before crashing it. He tried to escape but was caught a short time later.
The chase ended in the area of Alexis Lucia Road and Mariposa Road. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police confirmed that 26-year-old Michael Watts and 28-year-old Devin Mitchell were the suspects apprehended. Gaston County Communications said the chase began around noon in Mecklenburg County and ended in Gaston County near Alexis Lucia and Mariposa roads.
CMPD officers said that around 11:15 a.m., they were notified that a stolen Ford F-250 had entered their jurisdiction. They responded to Sam Wilson Road at West Pointe Drive to try to pull the truck over. When they tried, the driver, later identified as Mitchell, fled the scene at high speed. According to reports, Mitchell and his passenger, Watts, jumped out of the vehicle near Pressley Road during the chase. Watts was found hiding in a dumpster with help from Good Samaritans, the Crime Reduction Unit, and K-9s. Police said he had multiple outstanding warrants from Mecklenburg and Gaston counties.
During that time, Mitchell allegedly stole an unoccupied Amazon delivery truck that was left running while the driver was making deliveries. The truck was driven through Mecklenburg and Lincoln counties before stopping in Gaston County, barely over Lincoln’s edge. He then jumped out of the truck and ran but was caught a short time later. An Amazon representative sent the following statement: “We confirmed the driver delivering for Amazon is safe, and we’re thankful for law enforcement’s quick response.”
Police have not announced what charges the men face, but arrest records show that Mitchell was arrested in May for felony larceny of a motor vehicle.
