Durham, NC (August 15, 2024) - According to local news sources, a man was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Thursday morning in Durham County after a police chase that began in Morrisville. The tragic incident occurred on South Miami Boulevard, just south of the Research Triangle Park (RTP), around 4:41 a.m. on August 15, 2024. The vehicle, a white 2016 BMW SUV, was discovered in a vacant field by a passerby, who alerted Durham police. The male driver, who was ejected from the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The fatal crash has been linked to a carjacking and armed robbery that occurred earlier that morning in Morrisville. Morrisville Police reported that around 2:23 a.m., four suspects—described as a Hispanic man and three Black men, one armed with a handgun—assaulted a victim and stole the BMW SUV from the 1100 block of W. Shore Court, near the Camden Westwood Apartments. Shortly after the carjacking, Morrisville officers spotted the stolen vehicle heading towards Durham on Chapel Hill Road. A pursuit ensued but was called off after officers lost sight of the vehicle near the intersection of Chapel Hill Road and Page Road.
Durham police later responded to the crash site on South Miami Boulevard after receiving a call from a passerby who noticed the wrecked SUV. Upon arrival, officers found the driver ejected from the vehicle and deceased. The identity of the victim has not yet been released, and investigations into both the crash and the earlier carjacking are ongoing.
The section of South Miami Boulevard between Emperor Boulevard and Surles Court was closed for several hours as the Durham Police Department’s Traffic and Crash Team conducted their investigation. Law enforcement has urged anyone with information related to the crash or the carjacking to contact the appropriate authorities.
