Authorities from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) initiated the chase around 12:28 p.m. on Crown Parkway in Durham County. The pursuit began when a trooper attempted to pull over the Chrysler Pacifica for a seatbelt violation. Rather than stopping, the driver, identified as 27-year-old Michael Devon Hester Jr. from Creedmoor, sped away, leading law enforcement on a chase that briefly entered Wake County before circling back into Durham County.
The Pursuit Across Multiple Counties
As the chase intensified, troopers from NCSHP initially led the pursuit but eventually disengaged as the suspect approached downtown Durham. At this point, deputies from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office took over, continuing the chase into a residential area. According to witnesses, the suspect was driving at high speeds, narrowly missing vehicles and pedestrians as he fled through local streets.
An eyewitness described the chaotic scene, recounting, “I heard sirens, and next thing I know, there was a black car with tinted windows speeding about 100 mph on Holloway towards downtown, with a state trooper and several sheriff’s deputies in pursuit.”
The Crash on Angier Avenue
The pursuit ended dramatically on Angier Avenue at Bingham Street when Hester’s vehicle collided with a pickup truck, veered off the road, and struck two utility poles. The driver of the pickup involved in the collision was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while Hester was treated for minor injuries at the scene before being taken into custody. He was subsequently transported to the Durham County Jail.

Michael Devon Hester Jr. now faces an extensive list of charges. The NCSHP charged him with multiple felonies, including felony fleeing to elude arrest, felony possession of a stolen vehicle, and felony assault with a deadly weapon. Additional charges include failure to heed police lights and sirens, aggressive driving to endanger, driving with a revoked license, and several traffic violations such as unsafe passing, failure to wear a seatbelt, and stop light and stop sign violations.
The Durham County Sheriff’s Office also levied additional charges against Hester, which include fleeing/eluding arrest with a motor vehicle, reckless driving with wanton disregard, simple possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance, and unsafe passing over a yellow line. As per court records, Hester remains in custody without bond and is scheduled for an initial court appearance in Durham County Court.
Local residents expressed concern over the dangerous pursuit. "If you're endangering people's lives, you don’t know who's in the way," said Durham resident Paul Tyson. "They had to do what they had to do to get him safely, but I wish they would have prevented this.”
