Iredell County, NC (July 2, 2024) - According to local news sources, a tragic accident occurred on July 2, 2024, in Iredell County, leading to the death of 28-year-old Keonte Shakir Forney and the arrest of 27-year-old Ridge Rashaun Gray. The incident unfolded when a North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) trooper stopped to assist the two men who were replacing a flat tire on a silver Hyundai Elantra on Interstate 40.
During the routine check, both individuals provided false identifications to the trooper. Further investigation indicated that the passenger, Forney, may have been a wanted person. While the trooper was verifying the warrants, Gray, the driver, fled the scene, heading east on I-40. The trooper pursued the Elantra, which eventually exited at Exit 150 toward NC-115 in Statesville. At the bottom of the exit ramp, the Elantra collided with the rear end of a FedEx truck.
Keonte Shakir Forney was pronounced dead at the scene. Ridge Rashaun Gray sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken into custody after receiving treatment at a local hospital. Gray faces several charges, including felony flee to elude arrest, felony death by vehicle, reckless driving, driving while license revoked, failure to heed light and siren, failure to stop for a red light, failure to reduce speed, and failure to maintain lane control.
The driver of the FedEx truck suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Gray was arrested on the evening of July 2, but as of the morning of July 3, he was not listed as an inmate in Iredell County.
