Charlotte, NC (March 26, 2023) - Local news outlets report a tragic accident in southwest Charlotte early Sunday morning, resulting in the death of a 15-year-old and serious injuries to a 44-year-old driver.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to a crash near the intersection of South Tryon Street and Erwin Road around 1 a.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered a flipped 2015 Kia Optima with significant front-end damage and a 2015 GMC Acadia, also with major front-end damage. Ri'chard Anthony Donell Davis, the 15-year-old driver of the Kia, was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic. The other driver, Carolina Areza, was taken to Atrium Health Main with serious injuries.
Authorities revealed that Ri'chard was driving at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the stolen Kia, crossed into oncoming traffic, and collided with the GMC Acadia on the front driver's side. The Kia Optima had been reported stolen two days prior to the accident. Toxicology results for Ri'chard are still pending.
Carolina Areza, the driver of the GMC Acadia, was reportedly not speeding and not impaired at the time of the crash. South Tryon Street at Erwin Road was closed as police investigated the incident.
