Marion, NC (July 8, 2024) - According to local news sources, a small aircraft crashed Sunday night near the McDowell/Rutherford County line in North Carolina, resulting in the deaths of three people. One of the deceased was from Spartanburg, South Carolina. The crash occurred in the mountains near Rutherfordton, North Carolina, and was discovered Monday in the Brackett Town Road area. The pilot and two passengers were found dead onboard.
The plane, owned by Air Star Aviation, took off from Johnson County Airport in Mountain City, Tennessee, at 8:29 p.m., destined for Rutherfordton. Despite unfavorable weather conditions, reports indicated clear conditions at the time of takeoff. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are leading the crash investigation.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol identified the victims as pilot Adam Plummer, passenger Charles Mather Jr., and passenger Scott George, a skydiving instructor from Spartanburg. According to the FAA, the plane was a Cessna C182 that could hold up to four passengers and was registered in Chester County. It was leased to Skyline Carolina and was used for jump operations at Skydive Mountain City in Tennessee, though it was not involved in jump operations at the time of the accident.
The plane was last seen at 8:57 p.m. around Rutherfordton, North Carolina. Flight Aware's tracking program indicated the plane was in flight for 28 minutes and was within 8.8 miles of its destination. The wreckage was found Monday morning after search and rescue efforts began around 6 a.m.
Air Star Aviation stated that the crash likely occurred due to poor weather conditions. The NTSB will release a preliminary report within 30 days, with a final report expected in 12-24 months.
