Greensboro, NC (April 13, 2024) – According to local news sources, two men have been arrested and charged in connection with a hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of an NC A&T State University student, Xiomara Moore. The accident occurred at the intersection of North Elm Street and East Friendly Avenue.
On April 13, at approximately 4:52 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a crash involving a Hyundai Sonata driven by Xiomara Moore, 21, of Gastonia. Moore was traveling west on Friendly Avenue and entered the intersection on a green light. A stolen Jeep Cherokee, driven by Darion Tyric Valentine, 22, was traveling north on North Elm Street at an excessive speed and ran a red light, colliding with Moore's vehicle. The impact was severe, and despite emergency medical efforts, Moore succumbed to her injuries.
The driver, Darion Tyric Valentine, fled the scene, abandoning the stolen vehicle. He was later apprehended in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on June 17. Valentine faces multiple charges, including felony hit-and-run death, felony possession of a stolen vehicle, careless and reckless driving, speeding, operating without a license, running a red light, possessing fictitious registration plates, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
The passenger in the stolen Jeep, Dasyne’ Akiese Hairston, 23, was also arrested and charged with felony hit-and-run death as a passenger, felony possession of a stolen vehicle, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Both Valentine and Hairston are expected to be extradited to Greensboro to face these charges.
The tragic incident has deeply affected the NC A&T community, where Moore was a junior majoring in Health Science Management at the Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences. Moore had aspirations of becoming a nurse and was well-regarded by her peers and faculty.
Valentine, who has a criminal history including a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle and a 2021 conviction for involvement in a shooting, is currently held in the Horry County Detention Center in South Carolina, along with Hairston. They await extradition to North Carolina to face their charges.
