Two Juveniles Arrested And Charged In Fatal Hit And Run of Robert Birch After Street Racing in Charlotte on July 28, 2024

Charlotte, NC (July 28, 2024) - According to local news sources, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) is investigating a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred on Albemarle Road. The crash, which took place on the morning of July 28, involved two vehicles and resulted in the death of an 81-year-old man, Robert Birch.

Officers responded to the scene at approximately 9:45 a.m., finding a 2011 Toyota Camry with severe passenger-side damage and a 2006 Nissan 350Z with front-end damage. Birch, the driver of the Camry, was transported to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His 79-year-old passenger sustained serious injuries and was also hospitalized.

Investigations revealed that the Nissan 350Z was racing a 2012 Scion passenger vehicle when it collided with the Camry, which was making a U-turn. After the crash, the driver and passenger of the Nissan fled the scene with the occupants of the Scion. CMPD officers later located the Scion and detained all individuals involved.

The drivers of both the Nissan and the Scion, who are juveniles, have been charged as adults. Their charges include felony hit-and-run resulting in death, spontaneous street racing, and driving without a license. Additional charges are pending with the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. The identities of the juveniles have not been disclosed due to their age.
