Dare County, NC (December 12, 2024) - According to local news reports, a tragic car accident on the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge claimed the life of a 2-year-old boy and left two others injured. The crash, which occurred at approximately 8:02 a.m., involved a 1991 Ford Mustang and a 2023 GMC Acadia.
The Mustang was stopped in the far right-hand lane of the U.S. Route 64 Bypass when it was struck from behind by the GMC, which failed to reduce speed. The impact caused the Mustang to catch fire. The driver of the GMC, a Columbia, NC resident, immediately pulled the Mustang driver, a Manns Harbor local, out of the burning vehicle. Despite these heroic efforts, the 2-year-old boy, who was still in the car, could not be rescued and tragically died at the scene.
The Mustang driver was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he remains in critical condition with severe burns. The GMC driver sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from Outer Banks Health Hospital. Authorities have charged the GMC driver with failure to reduce speed and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. Police confirmed that neither alcohol nor speeding were contributing factors in the crash.
During the response, a Dare County Sheriff's deputy’s vehicle was rear-ended by another car as the deputy crossed the median to assist. Fortunately, no one was injured in this secondary collision, though the driver of the striking vehicle was cited for failure to reduce speed.
The Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge was closed in both directions until nearly 11 a.m. as authorities cleared the scene and continued their investigation. Law enforcement is reviewing dash camera footage from nearby vehicles to gather additional details. Sgt. Colby Pridgen of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol stated, "We are still looking into several resources to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident."
