The collision on U.S. Highway 70 near the Cornwallis Road underpass claimed the life of a 24-year-old woman and left three others, including a young child, seriously injured.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) reported that the crash occurred at approximately 3:04 a.m. when the BMW, traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes, struck a white Jeep Cherokee head-on. Following the collision, one of the vehicles caught fire, and the BMW’s driver fled the scene on foot.
The front passenger of the Jeep Cherokee, identified as Kortney Atkins of Goldsboro, tragically died en route to WakeMed. Three other occupants of the Jeep, including the driver Sydney Skelding, 25-year-old Michael Atkins, and a child under five, were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. While their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, the impact of this crash has left lasting consequences for the victims and their families.
Investigators are pursuing leads with the assistance of the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and a K-9 unit. Williams faces charges of felony involuntary manslaughter, four counts of felony hit-and-run resulting in severe injury or death, and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Authorities identified Kortney Summer Atkins as the deceased victim.
The arrest occurred just after 3:40 p.m. during a traffic stop on a 2016 white Mercedes Benz on I-95 northbound at the 71-mile marker in Harnett County. Williams, who was a passenger in the vehicle, had been tracked from Robeson County through Cumberland County prior to his apprehension. The driver of the Mercedes was briefly detained but later released after further investigation.
